Preply trial lesson: price with 70% off and what to expect
By Alex · Updated
The trial lesson is the first lesson you book with a tutor on Preply. It is where you check whether the tutor's style, pace and schedule fit you. With the Refer a Friend invite link the trial costs 70% less, which makes it the cheapest way to find out whether one-on-one lessons work for you.
How the trial price is calculated
Every tutor sets an hourly rate, and the trial lesson is normally priced at that rate. Rates start at a few dollars per hour and go up to $50 or more for tutors with narrow specialisations. With the 70% referral discount you pay 30% of the tutor's rate for the trial.
- Tutor at $10 per hour: trial costs $3 instead of $10.
- Tutor at $20 per hour: trial costs $6 instead of $20.
- Tutor at $35 per hour: trial costs $10.50 instead of $35.
Conditions to keep in mind
The discount applies only when you sign up as a new user through an invite link, only to tutors charging $7 per hour or more, and only within 90 days of registration. It cannot be applied to an existing account.
What happens during the trial lesson
A trial is a full lesson over video, held in Preply's own online classroom. Typically the tutor asks about your goal (conversation, an exam, work, relocation), checks your current level with a short conversation or exercise, and outlines a plan. It is also your chance to test the connection, the tutor's explanations and whether the time slot is realistic for you.
Come with one or two concrete questions, such as how the tutor handles homework or how many lessons a week they would recommend for your goal. The answers tell you more about the fit than any profile page.
After the trial: subscription or switch
If you liked the tutor, you continue through a Preply subscription: a fixed number of lessons per week at the tutor's regular price. If you did not, Preply's trial guarantee lets you switch to another tutor for free or get the trial refunded. The 70% discount itself is one-time and does not carry over to subscription lessons.
Choosing a tutor for the trial
Since the discount is a percentage, it saves the most on more expensive tutors, but price alone is a poor guide. Filter by the language you want, then look at the video introduction, the number of reviews and the tutor's availability in your time zone. A tutor whose slots match your week is worth more than a slightly cheaper one you can never book.
Frequently asked questions
How long is a Preply trial lesson?
Trials are regular-length lessons; the tutor's profile shows the lesson length they offer. The trial is a normal lesson, not a short demo.
Can I get the 70% trial discount on my existing account?
No. The referral discount is for new users only and is attached at sign-up through the invite link.
