How Preply's Refer a Friend program works

By Alex · Updated

Refer a Friend is the official Preply referral program. Existing students invite new ones, the new student gets 70% off their trial lesson, and the inviter gets lesson credits later. The rules are simple, but a few details decide whether the discount actually shows up at checkout.

Who can invite and who can be invited

The inviter (Preply calls them the advocate) needs an active Preply account with at least one completed payment. The invitee must be a completely new user: someone who has never registered on Preply before, even if that earlier account was never used. Both accounts must still be active when the reward is granted.

What the invited student gets

The invitee receives 70% off their first trial lesson. Two conditions apply: the tutor's rate must be $7 per hour or more, and the trial has to be booked within 90 days of signing up through the link. The discount is one-time and covers only the trial lesson; regular lessons afterwards are paid at the tutor's normal price through a subscription.

What the inviter gets

The inviter does not receive cash. Preply adds credits to their account, converted to their local currency, after the invited student confirms the first lesson of a subscription. Those credits are spent on the inviter's own future lessons. This is why a personal invite page like this one exists: it is a way for a student to fund their own studies, not a sales business.

Step by step: claiming the discount

The process takes a few minutes and does not require a promo code.

  • Open preply.com through the invite link. A banner confirms that a 70% first-lesson discount is waiting for you.
  • Create an account in the same session, without leaving the site first.
  • Choose a tutor whose rate is $7 per hour or higher. Filters by language, price, availability and reviews help here.
  • Book a trial lesson and check the discounted price on the checkout page before paying.
  • After the trial, decide whether to continue with a subscription. This step is also what triggers the inviter's credits.

Common reasons the discount does not appear

Most problems come down to one of a handful of causes.

  • You already had a Preply account, even an unused one. The program is for new users only.
  • You opened the link, left, and came back to preply.com later without it. The offer is attached during sign-up, so register right away.
  • The tutor charges less than $7 per hour.
  • More than 90 days have passed since you signed up through the link.

What if the trial tutor is not a good fit?

Preply offers a trial-lesson guarantee: if the first tutor does not suit you, Preply will help you switch to another tutor for free or refund the trial. So the 70% discount plus the guarantee makes the first lesson close to risk-free.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need to enter anything at checkout?

No. The discount is linked to the invite URL you signed up with. Preply applies it automatically and shows the reduced price on the checkout page.

How long is the referral discount valid?

90 days from the day you sign up through the invite link. It can be used once, for one trial lesson.

Can the terms change?

Yes, the program is run by Preply and its conditions can change at any time. The terms in this article were last checked on the date shown at the top; the current version is always on preply.com.
